Arnside proved to be an excellent choice for the recent four-day excursion by 23 members of Audlem Wildlife and Ecology Group (AWEG).

A Cumbrian village on the estuary where the River Kent enters Morecambe Bay within the Arnside and Silverside AONB (Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty) it is within close proximity to a number of wildlife sites.

An amazing variety of habitats and environments including limestone pavements, ancient woodlands, wetlands and extensive coastal areas.

Members visited six sites, observing 61 bird varieties and identifying 28 wild plants in flower.

The highlight of the trip for many was that a high proportion of the group managed to see that rare and elusive bird, the bittern.
