Sixteen members of AWEG (Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group) met for their annual dinner last night at The Lord Combermere and enjoyed an excellent meal.

The group meets every other month, normally at the pub, often with a guest speaker, and organises a number of wildlife orientated trips each year to sites of special wildlife interest.

Last year saw trips to the ancient Warburton Woods in north Cheshire; to Whixhall Moss in Shropshire; to Melverley Meadows, a spectacular wildflower series of fields just over the Shropshire border on the way to Whitchurch; and to the High Tide Event at Parkgate on the Wirral last January.

Trips lined up for the coming year include to Martinmere in Lancashire; to a wildflower site in Staffordshire near Eccleshall; a return visit to Whixhall Moss and an expedition out to Hilbre Island in the Dee Estuary.

Last night's dinner guests included founder Greville Watts who started the group after an ecology group met as part of the creation of the 2010 Audlem Parish Plan. Greville ran the group until he and his wife moved to Wem in 2013 when Bob Cartwright took over chairing the meetings.
