Irene Cunliffe and Suzanne Poole write: "Further to Jim Winfield's excellent website publicity telling us about the Audlem WI show on Saturday 22nd September, we can only shout 'hoorah for the WI'. Yet another success story.

"The whole thing went with a swing and a good time was had by all. There was jam – but alas no Jerusalem – mincemeat, chutney, cakes, handicrafts, paintings, photography, floral art and all the other exhibits which make a village show successful and fun.

"There were 40 exhibitors and 250 exhibits in all, including 17 from Blakenhall, Bridgemere and Burlydam WI's. 60 Gold stars were awarded. One very popular and unusual exhibit stand was that of "What Granny made" – the winner being a sampler dating back to 1866 worked by the grandmother of our longest standing member – Joan Vernon.

"The men only section was well supported and displayed a superb selection of artistic creations, including two large model airplanes – a Lancaster and a Mosquito – along with some fine examples of wood turnings and four atmospheric paintings.

"The judges thought it was an excellent occasion and all thanks are due to the army of WI helpers, including the valiant kitchen team who provided the tempting refreshments, and especially to the two organisers Ann Watson and Christine Plume."
