Audlem WI September Meeting

Audlem WI held their September meeting at the Methodist Church on a very warm afternoon! The meeting was well attended, two new visitors and 2 returning visitors were welcomed.

As no formal meeting is held in August it was nice to catch up with everyone after the summer break. Two outings took place in August, one to the Marina where 25 members enjoyed afternoon tea, organised by Sheila Jones.

The second outing, organised by Susan Kaufman, was a Garden visit to The Firs, Barbridge where members were able to walk around these lovely gardens that ran alongside the canal and enjoyed a delicious home made afternoon tea.

A Group outing is organised for later in the month to an evening entitled 'The Life and Times of Nell Gwynn' a very good speaker who has several other talks and always dresses the part.

Luncheon Club is being held at The Cheshire Cat, Nantwich on Thursday 21st September.

The Speaker for the afternoon, was the daughter of one of our members, Kerry Vacara, who gave a most fascinating talk on 'Communicating without a Voice'.

Technology has developed software for those who cannot communicate verbally, for instance stroke victims and other illnesses, children born with cerebral palsy or autism, they are able to communicate with an adapted iPad and use their eyes, facial muscles etc to operate a specially adapted computer enabling them to communicate.

Kerry kept us in awe for over an hour with the aid of a few slides and case studies as well as demonstrating how the technology worked. This is a very simple version of this wonderful use of technology!

Programme for next year is being worked on; a theatre visit to see The Nutcracker at The Vic in Newcastle has been organised for January to a matinee performance. If interested please contact Doreen Hubbard on 01270811821

After afternoon tea the President reminded us that the AGM will be held in November and that we need to start thinking about nominations for the Committee.

The raffle was drawn, birthday flowers given to 6 members. The President wished everyone a very safe journey home.

All visitors are most welcome, the next meeting being on Thursday 5th October.
