At the January meeting of Audlem WI president Christina Salisbury introduced the highly entertaining speaker Mr R McGregor, who demonstrated The Magic of Toys.

He started with some sleight of hand conjuring tricks and then showed some of his trick toys which were popular in his boyhood, including a spoon with a hole in it, a glass with holes around the rim and a telescope which blacked the eye when looked through! He is a member of the Magic Circle for which he auditioned by doing the Indian rope trick – taking a few pieces of different lengths of rope which he knotted together and, with a swish, it became one long piece. His collection of clockwork toys had everything from a moving model of a Hitler Youth member to a performing seal.

Ann Pearson thanked him for his talk and reminded everyone of the annual dinner to be held at Brookfield Golf Club. Irene Cunliffe confirmed that the domino play-off will be at Thornton House, with nine teams from the Malbank Group competing.

It was reported that the outing to Walton Hall for a Victorian Christmas was well supported and enjoyed, when members were fed and entertained in the ancestral home of the Daresburys. Also, the committee's Christmas evening at Willington Hall was another success story.

Pat Smith drew the raffle and presented birthday flowers to Margaret Bayley.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 7th February, with visitors and new members welcome.
