Sun 11 December – Prior to this game, Intertechnic had received the trophy for winning the league. In truth they ran away with the league, winning all bar one of their games and in the process scoring an average of 5 goals per game. On the back of our previous 5-0 and 5-1 defeats to Intertechnic, our boys began with what can only be described as enthusiastic trepidation!

However, what transpired was the most marvellous game of football in which Audlem defended fantastically well and looked like they may well sneak a goal themselves. The final score of 0-0 does not do justice to what was a really thrilling game.

The Audlem players worked as hard as I have ever seen a team of children work. Every one of them darted up and down the pitch relentlessly. Each time it looked like Intertechnic were about to break away, a red shirted whirlwind would arrive and put the ball safely away. In the event that a shot did get through, we had a goalkeeper who played like a latter day Jan Tomaszewski (quiz question – who is he?!). Everything was pushed, tipped, palmed or kicked away in spectacular fashion. Goalkeeping excellence indeed.

This was not just backs to the wall stuff though. As confidence grew, Audlem began to pass accurately and quickly and with luck could have scored themselves. The final whistle was greeted with great joy by our players, who despite being told to ignore the league table and to forget about results, knew full well that they had pulled off a minor upset!
