Betley 0 Audlem Saints 2

The experience of last season is showing now and despite the best efforts of the opposition, for whom it was their first game together, the sense of domination by the Saints was clear – the Saints' goalkeeper did not have a meaningful shot to save in the full 30 minutes. The tone was set by our captain for the day who from midfield never stopped running. The final new signing from the summer made his debut this week as well and appeared to fit in quickly.

The boys are now beginning to show a little composure on the ball at times and the passing continues to improve as a result. In the first period, after a series of passes we worked an opening only for a fine tackle to prevent an opening goal. Betley were making it difficult but posed little threat themselves in the final 3rd of the pitch.

When the first goal did come it was impressive. A good move appeared to have been foiled as a shot was blocked but as the ball bounced back and slightly up, a deft lob with the outside of the right foot from outside the penalty area left their goalkeeper stranded.

In the second period another lovely lobbed volley from some way out which found the back of the net was disallowed, before the same player took advantage of some hesitancy in the Betley defence to win the ball and then fire home. Although there were no more goals, the scoring opportunities continued to be created and Audlem were worthy winners.
