Many locally will be distressed to read of the death of Audlem resident Irene Stockton following a car crash in Whitchurch.

Irene was pronounced dead at the scene, which happened in Station Road near the Homebase store.

Irene, aged 66, was extremely well-known locally having lived in the village all her life, had worked in the village's pubs for many years and was an Audlem Parish Councillor from 1995 until 2011.

Our thoughts are with her husband Derek, her three sons, her family and many friends.

Irene was driving a silver Ford Fiesta towards Whitchurch town centre, while a blue Jeep Patriot Sport was travelling in the opposite direction at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Jeep, a 59-year-old man from Whitchurch, did not need hospital treatment for his injuries and no-one else is thought to have been involved in the collision, which happened at about 1.00pm on Thursday.

The coroner has been informed of her death and an inquest will be opened shortly.

Road closures were put in place around the area by police while investigations took place. An ambulance, a paramedic area support officer, a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have seen the crash or anything leading up to it. Any witnesses should contact West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 258 of April 30th.
