The next Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) walk is on Saturday 29th January led by Jean Stainthorpe from Ellesmere — around Blake Mere and Cole Mere. Meet Audlem Car Park 9 am.

The walk is a flat, easy 6 miles along the canal tow path, including Ellesmere Tunnel, passing by Blake Mere, circling Cole Mere, along the shore of Blake Mere again and back to the start. With lovely views across the meres if the weather is fine.

There are no stiles and just a few kissing gates. There are no livestock and only a short distance by the road so it is very dog friendly. No surprise to learn it is not mud free but fairly easy going as much of it is on firm ground. The tunnel is 87 metres long, and not too dark, with a handrail, but you may wish to bring a torch.

Toilets are available at the Ellesmere visitor centre which is a short distance from the start; coffee/lunch available there after the walk.

Starting point: The Moor Car Park SY12 0PA

Take A525 towards Whitchurch, continue from the bypass on the A525, then A495 signposted Oswestry; at the junction with A528 turn right towards Ellesmere and the car park is a short distance on the right. Parking costs £2.30, card only.

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.

Non-members of Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
