Saturday 12th March – Ramblers Walk Details

Peter Kay is leading our walk on Saturday next 12th March leaving Audlem Car Park 8.15 am.

His description follows:-

The walk is just under 10 miles with 1,400 ft of ascent from the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms taking in Stokesay, Brandhill Gutter and Onibury. It is a 3 booter.

The Discovery Centre location is at the southern end of Craven Arms after the last roundabout where the road from Clun enters and just after the lights for a pedestrian crossing. GR SO434825 and SY7 9RS. You take the first left after the roundabout and then turn right into the centre. It wont be open when we get there so no toilets. There was an honesty box for car parking contributions by the main entrance but this appears to have been vandalised. However you may like to go in at the end of the walk for a cup of tea and one of their delicious cakes.

We did a recce on Friday. Much of the walk was surprisingly dry. However there were places where it was quite muddy and early on there was an atrocious 1/3 of a mile of exceedingly muddy track. We found poles invaluable. Hopefully it may have dried up a little by next weekend. It was very slow going in the muddy bits.

Dogs: For the first half of the walk there were quite a lot of sheep about in open fields. Many border crossings has kissing gates though there were several high stiles. We cross the busy A49 twice and also the railway line.

It takes about an hour and a quarter to the Discovery Centre. To give us time to enjoy our end of walk refreshments before the cafe winds down I am suggesting that we leave the Public Hall car park at 8.15.

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.

Non-members of Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
