Audlem Ramblers Borders Walk

Setting off from Chirk castle (wonderful daffodil display). 15 ramblers from Audlem set off (and 15 were counted at the finish!) on Easter Saturday for a 10 mile walk in glorious sunshine (clearly pre-booked).

After leaving the castle, the walk was deceptively easy until the Crogen bridge over the Ceiriog River, where a Welsh army routed the English (Welsh account) back in 1165. Under new rules there is no independent confirmation – English "version".

Anyway, this was where the walk steeply ascended a bank alongside Offa's Dyke, facilitating good views over the local chipboard factory in Chirk, Wrexham, and over Shropshire including the Wrekin and the hills by Church Stretton.

There were long stretches of the walk along Offa's Dyke, eventually leaving it to ascend Selattyn Hill.

This hill is the site of a bronze age settlement and a Victorian Tower. There is also supposed to be a trig point – which appears to be completely covered by dense shrubs and other growth. One part time member of the walk claims to have found it – but no photographic evidence was provided.

Lunch was taken here!

It was relatively all downhill back to the river Ceiriog, with views over to the Pont Cysyllte aqueduct as well as the railway and canal viaducts at Chirk. Cross the road and into the Chirk Castle Deer Park and back to the car park.
Then back to the Shroppie for a de-brief in the sunshine!

A Grand day out!
