Jon and Stuart Furber, the sons of Richard and Janet Furber, were prominent last night as Nantwich Young Farmers won their third consecutive Senior Debating & Speechmaking competition against Sandbach Young Farmers. The final of this event was a keenly contested affair in front of a large audience in the mid-Cheshire village of Byley and was won on the narrowest of margins.

Jon Furber captained the Nantwich team in the two debates, one on an agricultural topic – 'Energy crops will be the saviour of British agriculture', the second on a non-agricultural subject – 'Car driving on the road in the UK should start at 21 and finish at 70'. He also made a five minute speech on 'Farmers' Wives', a subject given to him only seven minutes earlier. Stuart gave the pre-prepared speech on 'Preparing for an Interview'.

The victory was a fitting finale to Jon's captaincy of the Nantwich team as he now has to retire after thirteen years of competition as his thirtieth birthday is looming. There was another Audlem connection with the event – local councillor Rachel Bailey is the President of the Cheshire Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs which organises the competition.
