We continue our series on Audlem and district businesses by looking at the Mill Shop, down on the Wharf. It's packed with interesting gift ideas.

Audlem MillAudlem Mill is located on the canal wharf, between the Bridge Inn and the Shroppie Fly. It's one of Audlem's best known historic buildings. The two retail floors have a wide range of goods of interest to all the family.

Audlem itemsMost of these feature paintings of Audlem Mill by local artist Sheila Webster. Wooden jigsaws in three sizes (very challenging!), mugs, boxes of fudge and shortbread, keyrings, fridge magnets, etc.

Giftware"Old Tupton Ware" ceramics (in the style of Moorcroft or Clarice Cliffe); ceramic animal salt and pepper sets, toast racks etc; scented candles in jars; jigsaws of canal and rail scenes; dinner candles in a wide variety of colours ("fork handles" for £2.99!); magnetic hematite bracelets and watches, coasters and much, much more.

PaintingsAlways a good selection of original art. Featured works at present include those by local artists Sheila Webster (also some framed and unframed prints of hers), George Baker and the late Maureen Hinchliffe, as well as works by well-known canal artists Sarah Pressland and Harley Crossley.

Also, don't forget our annual art exhibition two weeks either side of Easter.

Canal related giftsSuperb collection of antique Measham teapots; canal ware painted by Jane Marshall of Audlem and Mary Parry of Tyrley; brass canal plaques; lock windlasses and mooring pins; antique ribbon and lace plates; coasters, table mats and teapot stands; model narrow boats.

BooksCanal books (probably the best selection anywhere in England); railways, some on closed local lines, and a range of local walking books.

NeedleworkKits designed and produced at Audlem Mill include the Abacus Designs range of over 200 cross stitch kits, "Take Away Teddy" knitting kit, Tube lined Angelina kits, and rag rug kits.

Superb lightweight needlecraft frames, both hand-held and table/lap versions – a perfect present for any stitcher, silk painter or textile artist. Also, traditional wooden hoops in many sizes.

KnittingHuge range of types and colours of wool and yarn; knitting needles; accessories; adult, child and baby patterns etc. Try the giant wooden needles, available in two sizes (about 2' and a metre), or even the more traditional sizes!

BeadingLots of beads of various shapes and sizes (rocailles, hearts, seed beads, bugle, bean beads, mixes), including some beautiful hand-made lampwork beads and statement pieces, beading wire, needles, pliers and other accessories. Books on beading.

Haberdashery and notionsFrom tape measures, sewing needles and pins to cutting mats and thimbles. And finally, tapestry shopping bags, pocket money toys, etc.

Opening timesAudlem Mill is open to Christmas on Tuesdays to Fridays from 10.00 to 4.00, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00 to 5.00.
