Audlem has a ball

About seventy of Audlem's finest – including a few very welcome guests from further afield – wined, dined and danced in style at the Public Hall's Spring Ball last night. As well as being a hugely enjoyable social occasion, the ball raises valuable funds for the Public Hall.

Many of the dinner-suited male guests, and possibly some of the ladies, were delighted to find on arrival a welcome innovation provided by bartender Ralph Warburton – a cask conditioned ale, Spitting Feathers, which went down a treat. A splendid meal followed of French onion soup; roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and a choice of apple pie or oranges in Cointreau, then coffee and mints, served by the very efficient catering team.

The entertainment was provided by Nantwich-based group Feedback, many of them teachers – and how good it was to see and hear a young sax player performing with them. Most guests danced the night away, some clearly displaying the skills learnt at their Burleydam dancing lessons!

The excitement reached a crescendo when news of England's surprise rugby victory against France filtered through – indeed it was such a surprise, one trusty soul was dispatched to the Lord Combermere to verify the result! Another twenty or so guests would have made the evening perfect – and that bit more profitable. Perhaps it was that evening kick-off in Paris to blame with, for some, the oval ball winning over the Spring Ball.

If so, you missed a great social event. Make a mental note and book next year – whatever the competing attractions.
