Audlem Emerges from a Two Year Hibernation

We have all experienced the worst pandemic for decades which has impacted individuals, families and the current cohort of schoolchildren

But it is now wonderful to see our village community gradually emerging from a pandemic which left so many housebound, but which thanks to our scientists and a very successful vaccination programme, means our village is gradually returning to the vibrant community we have known and loved for so many years.

Our thanks must go to our local businesses and traders who were able to adapt to the difficult circumstances and keep us supplied with local produce, takeaway meals, medicines, special gifts and our medical centre for looking after us whilst being on the front line for infection.

We are able to welcome new businesses such as Linden Stores and Cafe at No. 11 but are very sad to learn CycleSport has decided to retire.

We would like to think that AudlemOnline played its own small part by providing news of what's happening, a discussion forum, pandemic statistics, and some entertaining puzzles and a place for businesses to tell people what they are doing.

As restrictions are removed we are well placed to welcome visitors to our village. Holiday accommodation is now more available – cottages, caravan parks, lodges and of course canal moorings.

Top of the league Audlem FC, Audlem Saints (Now with some 70 youngsters ) Bowling Clubs (Indoor and Outdoor), Audlem Probus, Audlem Women's Institute, Connected Threads, Audlem Rambling Society, Tennis Club, our upgraded Public Hall and Annexe with changing rooms and Gym are now operational – Bridge Clubs and painting. All these are now open again

The mainstays of our village are of course ADAS, ASET, ADCA who keep our village in perfect order, provide a wonderful Christmas atmosphere and planting, Entertainment events and Care for the elderly and housebound.

The key to all of these groups is residents, caring for where they live, and being prepared to get involved as a volunteer, and especially as the village has expanded over the last few years. So if you wish to help do make yourself known to your group of choice.

As the village has changed and older members retire one of the Key groups who would welcome help is the Parish Council who provide the statutory services for the village. There are vacancies for both new and experienced residents with knowledge of the village.

One of the key issues that both businesses and and the groups above experience when they meet is the inadequate parking in the village. The public car park is frequently full and so parking takes place up Cheshire street (on both sides at times).

In the South of the village Windmill Drive is heavily used and the Methodist Church (when available) and Kingbur Place ( as Stephanie Richardson will testify)

The need for improved parking was identified in the Parish Plans of 2005 and 2010 and more recently in the Turnpike Field Surveys of 2018/2019 where a green sustainable carpark was identified as a top priority.

Initial studies suggest a significant escalation to the cost of this project.

But is it not now time for the village to come together to seek a project manager to drive this through and enlist the help of local building contractors, agricultural engineers, and farmers who may well have the equipment needed make this happen at a reasonable cost.

This is what happened at the Tennis Club some time ago – but more on that tomorrow.
