Well another month has 'Whizzed past on the canal in Audlem' after a busy month of lock keeping, general housekeeping and lock gate painting we find ourselves involved in the September Task Force Day on the flight of locks in Audlem.

As normal the day is arranged around the Canal and River Trust's Lead Volunteer, this month it is the turn of Angela Barnett, a new name to you all, 'Ange', her preferred working name has been employed by the C & R T for a number of years and has recently been promoted into the role of a 'Team Leader' whose working focus is on giving support to volunteer groups within the C & R T.

So I am sure that you will all get used to seeing her in and around our area of responsibility.

Back to the Task Force Day, with the weather being slightly changeable today the group have been requested to focus on the approach road from the Bridge Inn down towards the Shroppie Fly Pub, cutting back overhanging tree branches, cutting back and clearing the road side gutters, trim the overgrown hedges and tidy the area including the steps from the road down to the canal.

On the subject of the canal entry road, the large potholes as you entered the Shroppie Fly Pub car park have been very professionally filled in and repaired, well done!

This month with some of the team still on holiday we find ourselves with 5 volunteer members available, but as normal we cover the work programme with plenty of time to spare, this includes lots of tea breaks and the 'odd biscuit' supplied by Ange. Inall, another great 'damp' day on the canal.

For information, later this month, the 'Canal & River Trust' in conjunction with the 'Audlem Parish Council' are planning an extra Towpath Taskforce Day 'Saturday 30th September'

The plan of work is a towpath refurbishment taskforce working at upgrading the stretch of towpath between Locks 11 and 12, notices / signage giving full information and details are being distributed.

I am also advised that a news ' notice is being sent to Audlem on Line giving full details for publication on the village news website.

Derek Jones,
Volunteer Lock Keeper / Lock Ranger.
