At a well attended AGM of the Audlem Charity Shop in the Bridge Inn yesterday, it was announced that after another successful year, a cheque for £20,000 would be presented to St Luke's Hospice as this year's sole beneficiary.

Also announced were next year's beneficiaries: proceeds would be equally divided  between St Luke's Hospice and Donna Louise Children's Hospice Fund.

A surprise item on the agenda was a performance by John Hardy featuring a violin that had been donated to the shop in a very sorry state. Following restoration by John it was now in full working order. The folk group 'Forlorne Hope' rounded off the meeting in fine style.

Thanks to the new tenants of the Bridge Inn, Gary and Vicky, for the use of the conservatory and the biscuits provided with the tea and coffee – certainly an interesting first day for them.

Martin Keighley, Chairman of St Luke's Hospice, (and resident of Coxbank) said: "What a difference a year makes and what a difference the people of Audlem make!

"Yesterday afternoon, as Chairman of St Luke's Hospice, I was delighted to attend the first AGM of the Audlem Charity Shop since its resurrection last year and even more delighted with the cheque for £20,000 presented to St Luke's from the first 10 months of trading since re-opening.

"I would just like to congratulate all of the volunteers and supporters in the village for their tenacity in not allowing the shop to close and for choosing St Luke's as their inaugural charity. Everyone should be extremely proud of this great achievement."
