Today, Audlem Online continues its review of Audlem's shops with a look at the Audlem Aid to Cancer Research Charity Shop.
This charity started life 36 years ago as a small business above the former Phoenix pub on Shropshire Street, but is now situated next to the Bridge Inn.
The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 12.30pm and not only sells a wide range of second-hand goods and clothing, but also provides a welcome to those who may only want to drop in for a chat.
It is worth noting in these credit crunch days that a person can be well dressed, from top to toe, for under £10 by visiting our "Aladdin's cave". Indeed, many of our customers return to us to tell of the success of their various purchases.
Amazingly, although our goods are sold at very competitive prices, we gave Cancer Research UK £20,000 in 2006 and the same amount again in 2007.
Unlike most other charity shops we do not have any paid staff, but rely on a valuable team of volunteers, ably assisted by children, grandchildren, partners and friends. These assistants also provide additional important services such as the printing of posters and flyers, electrical repairs and transport for ferrying goods to special events and their extra help is much appreciated.
Christine and Peter Sylvester also make a welcome contribution to our funds by selling a quantity of our books at the Mill shop.
The slogan for Cancer Research UK is "together we will beat cancer" and we feel we are making a valuable contribution towards achieving this aim. So far a total of £207,050 has been contributed from our shop since we commenced our fundraising in 1972. Our accounts are, of course, fully audited and are available for public inspection.
Your continued donations of top quality goods to the shop are always much appreciated and we look forward to welcoming many more fresh faces in the future.
Our next major fund raising event is our Spring Fair to be held at the Methodist Chapel, Shropshire Street on Saturday, February 28th, when a wide range of goods including jewellery, produce, pictures, books etc will be available.
