Our president, Glenys Inight welcomed everyone to the meeting.

We had a wonderful afternoon, having been invited by David Wilson Homes to see their show houses at Stapeley. We went round the houses with two of their interior designers who explained how they chose the furnishings and fabrics for each home, showing how they did their designs on “Mood “ boards depicting the various colours and shades for the rooms. We came away with lots of ideas!

Irene reminded the members booked for the “Moulton Glass” workshop (24th October) they needed to bring £6 to the next meeting.

Our President then introduced our speaker – Mr Les Pickford – a caricaturist. He had been an art teacher. He began by telling us the history of cartoons not as we know them today. Back in the 1400’s painters such as Leonardo Da Vinci would use large sheets of white paper to draw their subject on before actually painting the picture. The sheets were known as Cartone. The only copy of a cartone by Leonardo is in London and is known as The Burlington House Cartoon. The cartoons we know today were started by Punch Magazine in 1834. He then drew some cartoon characters saying cartoons need props and by adding a few different strokes showed us how this happened. Observation and stereotyping also plays a part in cartoons. He then drew a cartoon story about Mr & Mrs Sid – which was very amusing. He finished his talk by us all drawing a cartoon character , following his instructions. This became our competition which was won by Marg Bourne. Sue Thomas then gave the vote of thanks. We then had tea and cake, and the raffle was drawn. The end of a fun afternoon.

Our next meeting is on Friday 3rd October when our talk will be “Argos to the Altar”

Visitors and new members are always very welcome.
