Aston & District W.I. August 2024 Report

This month, our Vice President, Heather Pass welcomed members and guests to our August meeting. She updated us all on local and regional activities taking place in the future including proposed theatre trips. A few of our members had submitted entries in the Nantwich Show which did very well indeed and she expressed a big thank you to all members who contributed and helped.

The Luncheon Club will not be meeting in August.

Our Walking Group will meet at Bellis Brothers Garden Centre at Holt on Wednesday 7th August at 10.30am.

This month our speaker for the evening was Nicky Patterson speaking about her life as an Air Traffic Controller. She has been an Air Traffic Controller at Manchester Airport for twenty-six years and gave us a very informative and fascinating talk about how she trained, saying it is an extremely high stress job dealing with routine matters as well as coping with the unexpected whilst all the while, keeping calm and using your best judgement at all times. She went on to explain that an Air Traffic Controller’s primary concern is safety, all the while managing the flow of aircraft into and out of the airport, as well as guiding pilots during take-off and landings. The duties also include monitoring aircraft as they travel through the skies. They keep aircraft flying, passengers travelling and cargo moving. She ended her talk by saying why she loved her job. Although it had its challenges, it was rewarding and, best of all, she gets paid to look out of the window and watch planes.

All in all, it was a most interesting talk and the vote of thanks was given by Jenny Bourne.

Our competition for a Holiday Postcard was won by Barbara Davies.

We finished our evening with a cup of tea complete with cakes and the usual raffle.

Our next meeting is on Friday 6th September at 2.00 pm in the afternoon at Sound Chapel when our talk is about Bees Bee Keeping.

Visitors and new members are always very welcome. For further information please take a look at our web site: – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
