Aston & District W.I. March 2022 Report

Members and guests were welcomed by our President Rosemary Lomas to our March meeting at Sound and Broomhall Community Centre.

An Outings Board was sent round for members to let us know their suggestions.

Kay Epton, on behalf of the British Legion, thanked members for their donations towards the Poppy Appeal last year.

This year is a very special year for Aston and District WI. The very first meeting of the branch was held exactly 100 years ago in November, 1922. A special dinner celebration is planned for later in the year.

Our Luncheon Club is meeting at the Lord Combermere in Audlem on March 8th at 12.00 noon.

This month, the Walking Group is meeting at the Brighton Belle, Winsford at 10.30am.

After the business of the day, our President introduced our speaker, Ellen Matthews who gave us a very entertaining and hilarious talk about her holiday souvenirs. She began by lighting a candle for the people suffering in Ukraine. Then she entertained us with her accounts of a few of her adventures to Nepal, Jordan and Australia, including riding a Harley Davidson Motorbike on Route 66 in the USA on her 66th Birthday.

In 2012 she volunteered as a ‘Meeter and Greeter’ at the Olympic Games where she also won two tickets for the Opening Ceremony. Her talk was enjoyed by all ladies.

After the vote of thanks, given by Dorothy Relton, we were all then ready to enjoy our tea and cakes.

The competition for a Holiday Souvenir was won by Sheila Jones

At the end of the afternoon, Ellen had one more surprise for us when she played a CD of ‘The Harmonies WI Singing Group’ and asking us all to join in a modern interpretation of ‘Jerusalem’.

Our next meeting is on 1st April at 7.15pm at Aston Chapel when Linda Banks will do a Flower Demonstration, the competition on that occasion being a small flower arrangement.

Visitors and new members are always very welcome and for further information please take a look at our web site: – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
