Aston & District W.I. October 2022 Report

On Friday, 7th October Aston and District WI took place at the Broomhall Community Centre.

We stood for a minute’s silence for the Queen as well as for one of our members who had passed away recently.

Our president reminded members of the forthcoming Centenary Celebration Meal which is to take place on Thursday 27th October at 6pm. She continued that nominations for the new the committee must be handed in before the end of tonight’s meeting. Ann Pye gave a report from Group Meeting she attended recently. Notice of the Christmas Party was given and members were asked to buy their tickets at the November meeting.

Sue Sullivan, the organizer of this month’s walk asked members to meet at the Bears Head at Brereton on Wednesday 12th October at 10.30am.

The Luncheon Club will meet at the Royal Oak at Worleston on Tuesday 11th October at 12.00 noon.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Thomas Jones with a talk entitled “It’s a Guide’s Life”. He explained how much training was involved and one of the requirements you needed was a second language. He illustrated his talk with slides of Chester which is where he is based. Ghost tours have been part of his repertoire and he assured us that he believes he has seen a ghost. He related several stories – some funny and some not so funny. Like the time he picked a group up from a liner at the Pier Head, Liverpool and part way through, one of the group went off on their own. A little while later, as the group was just about to return to the ship, a phone call from the police saved the ship from sailing minus a passenger! There were also many funny moments where foreign communications were misunderstood. It was a most enjoyable afternoon and the vote of thanks was given by Dorothy Relton.

Tea and cakes were enjoyed by all as the raffle was drawn and prizes presented.

This month’s competition was ‘A Photograph of Cheshire’, won by Heather Pass.

Our next meeting will be on 4th November and will be the A.G.M. when we will have a slide show entitled ‘100 Years of our W.I.’

Visitors and new members are always very welcome. For further information please take a look at our web site: – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk

Our meeting closed with God Save the King.
