Our president, Glenys Inight welcomed everyone to the meeting.

After singing Jerusalem she introduced us to our speaker Mr John Dwyer. His talk was entitled “Plodding to the Top” He gave us a very interesting and humorous talk about his life in the police force. He started out as an accountant which he found to be boring and on hearing a police car siren decided that a policeman was what he wanted to be. He started as a constable in Nottingham moving on to CID along with Special branch and worked along side MI5. He became an inspector, working during the Miners’ Strike – Following this he became a Chief inspector in the West Midlands where he was responsible for trialling the use of helicopters in police work.

On reaching the post of Assistant Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary he was involved with the fuel crisis – having to move to London to work with Tony Blair and Jack Straw in trying to resolve it. In 2010 with the removal of the Police Authority it was decided that there should now be a Police and Crime Commissioner instead. He was elected the first one for Cheshire. A role he has filled twice. He is now a professional speaker and an author.

He was thanked by Rosalind Mason.

During our time for tea and cake we were asked to count the items we had in our handbags – and if the bag got lost could we name all we had inside! Ros High won with 23 items. She was given a bell to put on her purse.

The competition for a new law was won by Diane Joslyn.

One of our members Dorothy Relton will be celebrating being “90” this month and so we all sang Happy Birthday and presented her with a cake.

The business then followed: Jackie Leigh and Karen Dean were congratulated on winning the Malbank Bowls Sheild.

“Dental Health Matters” items were being collected and will be again next month. The toothbrushes and toothpaste will be given to the Food Bank.

The “Blister Pack mountain” was ready to be taken to be recycled – who would have thought we took so may tablets!!
