Aston & District W.I. November 2019 Report

On Friday 1st November, Aston and District W.I. members were given a warm welcome by our President Jenny Bourne to the afternoon AGM meeting.
Our Secretary Joan Sweeney read her annual report giving a comprehensive review of all the previous year's activities.
Rosie Lomas reported on the group meetings which are to take place next year and also reminded members of the date of the Christmas Carol Service on Monday 2nd December at 7.30pm.

Jennifer Bourne, our retiring president, made the President's Address and thanked every member of the committee for their hard work and support over the last three years. The Vice Presidents presented her with a gift and a bouquet of flowers and a grand applause followed which expressed the member's appreciation for her Presidency.

After tea and cake were served the speaker for the afternoon, Mrs Amanda Glennon took to the stage with a talk entitled "The upsides of Downs". This was a very sensitive and informative talk about her family's personal life changing news that one of her twins was born with Downs Syndrome 13 years ago. The talk was illustrated with snap shots from her family album and a video of her twin's graduation from nursery. She explained the importance of her daughter having Numicon training for number work and Makatron for language. She told us that having a Downs child had changed her life completely but she wouldn't change the challenge she had been presented with all those years ago. She stressed the importance to keep teaching these children life skills, independence and friendship so that they too can enjoy a full life . The vote of thanks was given by Ann Pye.

The new committee members were announced and Rosemary Lomas agreed to be our new President.
This month's walk is organised by Irene and members are to meet at 'The Globe' at 10.30am Wednesday November 6th. The Luncheon club will also be meeting at 'The Globe' at 12.00 for 12.30pm on Tuesday November 5th.

The competition of a child's toy was judged by the speaker s daughter and was won by Heather Pass. The overall winner of the year was Glenys Inight with Diane Joslyn and Jen Bourne being worthy runner ups.

Reminders were given that the Christmas party will take place on Dec 6th at Broomhall Community Hall. Our February and March afternoon meetings will also take place at Broomhall due to the parking difficulties on Friday afternoons at Aston Chapel.

Visitors and New Members are always welcome, more details can be found on our website – www.astonanddistrictwi.org.uk
