Aston & District W.I. April 2023 Report

The April meeting of Aston and District W.I. took place in St Andrews Chapel, Aston at 7.15 pm on Friday 14th April and our President Glenys Inight welcomed members and guests.
Our President presented her report of the recent AGM at Winsford which she attended. The guest speaker was Paul Whittaker OBE who is an inspirational speaker, musician and performer who is profoundly deaf and is renowned for entertaining and educating people for some years.

This coming week, the Luncheon Club will meet at 'The Globe', Nantwich at 12 noon on Tuesday 18th April.

The Walking Group will meet on Wednesday 19th April at 'The Shroppie Fly', Audlem at 10.30 am.

Our speaker for the evening was Mrs Karen Taylor with a talk entitled 'How I ended up in Prison'.

She began her career as a Student Nurse at Leighton Hospital but while at a careers convention, she inadvertently signed up for the prison service. She was taken by surprise when, a few days later, the letter arrived asking her to attend for an interview, as she thought she had applied to join the Army! And so began her career as a Prison Officer.

On completion of her 16-week training course at Wakefield Prison, she was appointed to HMP
Norwich. This should have come as no surprise as it had the biggest prison hospital in the
country. Her role as Prison Hospital Officer included suicide screening as well as dispensing
medication; dealing with injuries; heart attacks and all manner of other illnesses.

She told us about a few of the many characters she had to deal with, giving us a brief insight into
prison life, including some of the weapons secretly made by the inmates.

It was a most enjoyable and illuminating talk enjoyed by all and the Vote of Thanks was given by
Joy Taylor.

The competition which was 'A Bar of...' was won by Mary Hignett.

After tea and doughnuts, raffle prizes were awarded and the meeting ended as usual with the
National Anthem.

Our speaker on 5th May is Mr J. Baddeley talking about "Music Nostalgia 50/60"s" and the competition is a Vinyl Record.

Visitors and new members are always very welcome. For further information please take a look at
