The 71st birthday meeting of Burleydam W. I. took on an Eastern flavour when our speaker Rachel Houston- Holland, regional head of Fine Arts at Wright Marshall Ltd shared with members her passion for Asian Art..

She told us how as a child, she had gone with her father to auctions and been fascinated by all things Asian, and bought her first piece when she was 12 years old.

Her talk was illustrated with pieces of Indian silver, a bronze Buddha from Tibet, a cloisonné vase from Japan as well as pottery and ivory artefacts from the East

She passed some of these pieces around the room for members to look at, but not a very small Satsuma vase which she said was worth £1500-£2000 at auction. The Chinese are now buying back many of their pieces of art and consequently prices have risen considerably.

Guests from other Malbank Group W. I. joined the celebrations for a buffet supper and a glass of wine.
The competition was for a small antique which was won by Jean; 2nd was Sarah; 3rd was Margaret.

The committee provided the excellent supper.

Next meeting on Tuesday August 2nd at 7.30pm the speaker will be Valerie Evans on 'Traditional Hand Printing processes.'

If you like the sound of what we do at Burleydam W. I., why don't you come and join us on the first Tuesday of the month at Burleydam Community Meeting Room or ring 01948 667064 for more information.
