July's Long ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk takes place this Saturday, the 13th, and is in the very pretty area around Clun.

John Vickers is organising this walk and I know he has made at least two visits to recce the route – barely escaping once from the attention of a herd of young cows! However the final route chosen is, he assures me, bovine free. Below is his description.

"A walk of 14K. starting and finishing in Clun with approximately 389m. of ascent along a mixture of quiet country lanes, forest and woodland tracks and footpaths.

"On arrival in Clun, turn first right after the garage and gather in the car park at the Memorial Hall. There are no toilets here, but for those who need them, visit the castle car park first in
the centre of the village.

'We walk south through the village to Sowdley Wood and then east along the southern side of the River Clun valley to reach the village of Clunton. We then climb the north side of
the valley along a quiet lane to eventually reach the ancient British iron age hill fort of Bury Ditches.

"From there it is downhill all the way back to Clun. Maybe muddy in places but otherwise no
rough terrain. Car park is free. Grade 2/3 boots."

Andy adds: John has just advised that having recce'd the walk again he feels that it would be advisable to leave dogs behind as there are young cattle in several fields that have to be negotiated. He will not be taking his.

8.30am start in Audlem car park this Saturday.
