Apedale Country Park Visit

Apedale is country park in Staffordshire close to Newcastle under Lyme and Chesterton.

It offers a myriad of lanes and public footpaths as well as paths not on the map! It would be very easy to lose oneself in some considerable forest!

The Audlem Ramblers visit on Saturday led by Jeanette Shenton was a voyage of discovery for the 6 attendees.

We parked at the Apedale Heritage Centre.

You soon realise that this is a former coal mining area and that many of the paths/gravel roads were there because of colliery work. Indeed, the size of that enterprise became clearer as we found we were walking for some distance along a disused railway line embankment.

The other major indications of mining were the ventilation chimney (originally some 200ft higher!) and the large wheel.

A very interesting and pleasant 4.5 mile walk on a Saturday morning (shorter and longer walks are available!)
