Di Constable has been in touch with Audlem Online about the mystery of the large white bird. She has written from southern Africa, yet another example of our world-wide readership. She says: "I am a friend of many years with Mike Hill and have visited your beautiful village on a few occasions – even been in the pub!

"I am wondering if the bird you are describing is not a Dark Chanting Goshawk (Donkersingvalk in Afrikaans). We have one that visits us and menaces the two small Yorkies. In fact, he (or it could be a she) grabbed and tried to lift one of the dogs and they are now terrorised. I am so surprised to see this bird here as it usually is found in semi-desert, but since we haven't had rain for sometime, perhaps he thinks this is the correct place he should be. Maybe 'your' bird is another one of these idiots that left and flew off course!"
