All change in Shropshire Street

The long anticipated parking changes in Shropshire Street have now come into force with a line painting team at work this morning.

While there is still parking outside the shops on the south side of Shropshire Street near the Square, further along the parking spaces have been moved across the street to the front of the Co-operative Food Store and with another short section outside Audlem Upholsterers.

The effect will be to create something of a chicane through the village, possibly discouraging some HGV drivers using the A525 and the A529.

There has also been concern expressed that a child, or indeed anyone, exiting through the automatic doors of the Co-op could have been hit by a vehicle that had been driven along the pavement to avoid the regular traffic jams.

A barrier outside the shop was refused but parked cars may well now act as a regular 'barrier' there.

The changes have attracted very mixed views. Some residents have expressed concern that the new arrangements will add to the traffic problems in the village centre as HGVs will simply get stuck as they negotiate their way through the chicane.

Others believe the change is another sensible step in attempts to reduce the numbers of HGVs through Audlem now that the A525 is no longer a Primary Route for long-distance heavy vehicles.

Experience will tell – from today.
