Millennium Bed – before and after

While gathering info on the Millennium bed rebuild, I asked the Boss and Vice Boss, "when was it first built?" I couldn't decide whether the returning looks were incredulity, sympathy or something else. I grew up with my dad saying, 'engage brain before speaking' ... sorry, dad!

The wooden back to the bed has stood up well for all these years but was starting to break down. Granite setts were laid in three courses to match the existing structure. The setts were reclaimed from the Tollgate and Woore road sign beds during their redevelopment, so virtually cost-neutral bar some mortar materials.

A team of volunteers turned up to rebuild the bed, encompassing all (previous) working lives except that of wall builders (to my knowledge). What a difference!
