Update on Beech tree bed

Planting has begun behind the benches under the beech tree – so far with four Fatsia japonicas, more plants to come. But the star of the show – so far – is Trevor the Trachy Trachycarpus fortunei to give him his Sunday name.

Before we started the huge cut-back of the area, Trevor was covered in leaves that reached to the ground. I set about with my fabulous hand shears (lost forever in the ‘Moseley bed’ sobs) , while others were carrying out dusty work, and raised Trevor’s skirt considerably. He is now looking fabulous with the flowers on show that would have been, mostly, hidden from view before the cut-back. The flowers will attract bees and, apparently, they give way to dark fruits – although I’ve never seen these, so I’ll keep an eye out.

Other plants that are being considered are (list not exhaustive):

Pittopsurnum

Skimmia

Euonymous

Ferns

Grasses

and a trial of sedum around the base of the glorious trunk.
