Our apologies to Chris Knibbs and our readers that this was not published yesterday due to a technical problem, but we thought readers might appreciate the ADAPT message

What a difference a week makes, a few days of warm weather and the grass grows, and Spring takes off after the slow start. The first produce ready from the gardens is the Rhubarb, which we have had a limited quantity on the market for the last three weeks.

Eaten raw , it is packed with high nutrient density, its tartiness is the malic acid which can be offset by dipping it into sugar or honey. It is high in Vitamin K1 and C and contains many anti-oxidents, and aids digestion.

Cooked Rhubarb-  is different taste altogether, much more mellow – delicious. Come early for some  Rhubarb on this weeks market.

A major constituent is oxalic acid which is mainly in the toxic leaves – so don't eat  them, but it is beneficial for the bees .

For the last 20 years it has been recommended practice to treat a bee colony with this acid in winter, effectively cleansing the bees of varroa mites

Also on the market will be tomato plants, other seedlings, and flowering border plants, free range eggs, honey to go with the rhubarb, apple juice, a new batch of crab apple jelly, and other jams and preserves.

We are on the Lord C Carpark from 10am till noon, and the weather is set fine for Saturday, so come and see us.
