Had fun this week giving a Bee and Beekeeping talk to a local WI group, they were a lively lot.
I highlighted the adulteration of imported products labelled as pure honey on our shop shelves and the new danger to our bees from the Yellow Legged Asian Hornet.( See separate article on this subject )
Their invasion is gradually creeping up the country from the South East corner. A colony was recently found near Warrington by a member of the public. They could seriously damage our Honey Bee population in the UK if there is no concentrated government action soon. An informative leaflet is available.
Our gazebo survived the weather last week and will be out again this week. I forgot to bring the special jam that I mentioned last week, it will be there along with its recipe. It is a batch of High Dumpsie Deary Jam made from Apple, Pear and Plums flavoured with Lemon and Ginger. It s a very old recipe and I would be surprised if it wasn t in Mrs Beeton . We have a copy in the ADAPT Food Group. There were special requests for Marmalade and Beeswax Lip Balms last week. They will be on the stall this week.It is preserve making season and we have them a-plenty. Just a few are Damson, Plum, Jumbleberry, Orchard Jams. Courgette, Plum, Beetroot and Orange, Tomato, and Spiced Damson Chutneys. We will also have Free Range Eggs, Apple Juice, Free apples, possibly runner beans, and other fresh vegetables.Cakes this week are:Apple crumble cake, Sticky date loaf, Lemon drizzle, Freshly baked cheese sconesThere will be a selection of autumn flowering bedding plants.Part of ADAPT 's ethos is that we encourage RECYCLING.
We recycle, jam jars, Honey jars, egg boxes, supermarket carrier bags, strawberry cartons and for Audlem Guides we collect biscuit, cake and cracker wrappers; cheese pouches; plastic bread bags and plastic bakery packaging; Ferrero Roche packaging; marigold gloves & packaging. This waste generates FREE cash donations into Audlem Guides' bank account, so every wrapper counts!
