ADAPT Saturday Market – Today 5/11/22

There will be no fireworks on Today's Saturdays Market stall, but there will be some chillies to turn up the heat. Sadly, it will be the last regular market of the year. The tomatoes are still continuing to ripen, the spinach is still growing and the Jerusalem artichokes are ready. A customer last week sent us some pics of the delicious artichoke soup they made from the recipe given out on the stall.

The chickens are having their last few days of freedom before being placed in lock down on Monday, as new National avian flu quarantine rules begin -so there will be a few eggs. Beetroot and courgettes make a return. We will also have bottles of fresh apple juice- which will keep for a week in the fridge or the juice can be frozen. We will have jams, preserves and chutneys to choose from. Stock up for winter!!. Runny and set Honey from 3 apiaries in Audlem is still available, as are distinctive beeswax candles presented in glass containers or a choice of 7 attractive moulded figures. There will be the last of the cut flowers, beeswax lip balms, not forgetting the free apples, Bramleys and many other varieties. This weekend I am wrapping up my Cox's Orange Pippins for storage over the winter.

It is the most well known dessert apple, with a rich, slightly sweet, almost nutty flavour. The skin is occasionally russetted, with autumnal reds and yellows over green. It was raised in England in about 1825 and been crossed to make many newer apple varieties. Back in the 1960's Cheshire was at the northern end of its range, not flourishing in the cold and damp -- the trees are doing a little better now! There will be a bucket full for those that come early. 10-12noon under the Buttermarket.

ADAPT members thank the Parish Council for allowing us to use the Buttermarket and thanks to the many residents and visitors who stopped by, getting our messages across to grow your own, buy local, shop local, recycle, and promote a more sustainable way of living.

On Saturday December 3rd we will be holding our Annual ADAPT Food Group Christmas Special Market with free hot mulled apple juice for every passer-by. This year we will be focussing on Christmas and seasonal food with recipes and lots for you to try and make your own.

Cheers
Chris Knibbs
ADAPT Secretary.
