There has been much press coverage of the recent decision to allow fracking related activity in Yorkshire, and the decisions relating to Lancashire are awaited with interest.

ADAPT's Energy Group has been considering the issue again in recent months and has prepared a new commentary on its views on the issue.

It can be read in fullhere, but, in summary, ADAPT is not in agreement with the current government's support of fracking on the grounds that:

  • The technology is being used by government as a reason to dilute its emphasis on renewable energy
  • It yields a new source of fossil fuels, jeopardising the achievement of the climate change goals recently agreed at the Paris Climate Change Summit.
  • The door appears to be open to widespread adoption of the technology without a structured pilot programme to prove that the risks associated with pollution, ground water contamination and geological destabilization can be managed successfully.

ADAPT's Energy Group is preparing further information on the subject which will appear on the AudlemOnline ADAPT Energy website area.
