Last Wednesday at Youth Club it was all about the simple pleasure of playing games. In this case it was big versions of old classics like Jenga, Snakes & Ladders, Dominoes and Connect 4. Youth Club is mostly about passing a chilled couple of hours hanging out with your mates and there are sooo many ways to do that.
This Wednesday 10th May we are doing it by making smoothies. Monique will be leading a kitchen session where you can get creative with fruit combinations and then blend them up and drink them, or make someone else drink them if they taste particularly vile.
Last week I was at a meeting to talk about Wifi stuff in the new annexe. With the roof joists in evidence now it's all getting very exciting. We at Youth Club can't wait to take up residence in our new space this Autumn. Lots of people are working very hard behind the scenes to create something quite special that I think we will be more proud of than we can perhaps imagine just yet.
To give that thought some context from Youth Club's perspective; We have a potential new volunteer who is planning to travel all the way from Sandbach to Audlem each week in order to gain valuable Youth Work experience prior to embarking on the Youth Work degree this Autumn. She has been unable to find a single, voluntary, Youth Club any closer to home despite an extensive search. Funding is often the reason offered for the absence of this valuable resource and that appears to be the case in communities far bigger than ours, such as Macclesfield, Bollington and Sandbach.
So, we get a warm, fuzzy feeling about the fantastic young people we see every week and knowing that very soon we will be able to offer them more and better once we have access to all the advantages of the new building.
We have a great team of committed people who each play a part by either helping us to find ongoing funding or by turning up week in, week out to help deliver the sessions that we bust a gut to keep as fresh as possible.
We are always thinking ahead and looking to meet as many needs as we can for our young people. Next in the pipeline is the potential addition of a drop-in Cafe session for Year 10s and upwards. We anticipate growing demand for our Wednesday sessions as we welcome a new intake of Year 7s in September. We also prepare to say 'hello', albeit a bit down the line, to newcomers when the new building developments become occupied. The future for Youth Club is very exciting and very busy.
If you are in anyway inspired by what you are hearing it would be brilliant to hear from potential volunteers or supporters. We are currently a team of 8 and we try to spread the load between us as best we can. If we want to offer an extra session, or, indeed, if we want to look at opening during the school holidays in future then we will be needing more help. I can promise you that it's an incredibly rewarding thing to do if you actually like engaging with young people (remarkably there are some people who don't apparently?!). If you're tempted to learn more, to come and meet us, to dip a toe in, to give us loads of money or just to say 'ah, there you are' then do feel free to contact Kate at either audlemyc@gmail.com or on 07789 915940.
Youth Club meets every Wednesday in term time at 7.15pm in the Public Hall. All comers welcome from Y7 upwards.
