Maureen Morgan has found a newspaper article dated 13th December 1919 outlining discussions concerning a captured German gun presented to the village.

It was sitting at Audlem Railway station but the first reaction (especially of the demobilised soldiers) was that it was not wanted. However at a special meeting this decision was overturned.

As if in anticipation of the verdict a group of ex-soldiers dragged it from the station to the Square while the meeting was on.

At the end of this meeting it was decided to ask the Public Hall Committee if it could be placed in front of the Hall.

The contemporary post card of Audlem from Holmes Bank shows the gun just visible on the Green in the bottom right hand corner? Click on the image to enlarge it.

Any memories?
