Ladies of Audlem W.I. had a surprise on Thursday evening when Irene Cunliffe spoke to us on the topic "What did you do in the war mum?"
On the Eve of the D day landings the talk was very appropriate. She had all the ladies laughing at her memories of being evacuated from Salford to Lancaster and later in Garstang.
The sadness she endured in Lancaster and the love she received from her 'Garstang auntie' was very moving. When not evacuated she endured horrendous bombing in Salford but was able to see the fun side of the camaraderie and the kindness of people to one another.
Irene and her family obviously suffered but with her entertaining skills we were all laughing and smiling at the amusing anecdotes.
