Ed: on the 25th January we published a message from Roy Plume as follows

"We are used to mice, rats, voles etc but have not been presented with one of these in 28 years.

Could someone identify it please.

Delivered to School Lane overnight.

Please call on 812114 if you know what it is."

Roy has now sent an update as follows:

Thanks to everyone who contributed to identifying the animal. Suggestions included Weasel, Stoat, Polecat and Mink.

I now know the photo I supplied did little to make identification easy, apart from the poor colour of the fur caused by the camera flash , I didn't include the tip of the tail; both of these I now know to be critical to an accurate identification.

The fur was brown and the tip of the tail was black, the shorter tail length pointed towards it being not fully grown.

Thanks to Chris Lewis who viewed the body on Friday and in his expert opinion confirmed it was a young Stoat.

"Well done to any of you who said that at home"
