A little late as the bicentenary was last June, but never mind!
Ian Atherton from Keele University is studying the commemoration of battlefields and how this has changed over the centuries and will talk to Audlem History Society on Thursday Jan 21st. (7.30pm Scout and Guide Hall, Cheshire St.).
As the British and Prussian Armies were led by the Duke of Wellington who regularly travelled through Audlem on his way to visit his good friend and fellow soldier Lord Combermere at Combermere Abbey and stayed at least once in the Audlem Vicarage (now demolished so no blue plaque) this does have local relevance!
The joy at the final collapse of our longstanding enemy Napoleon must have known no bounds and we still use the phrase 'met his Waterloo' to denote serious or final defeat. Last year the battlefield in Belgium hosted the largest ever re-enactment and there was a colourful service in St Paul's attended by members of the royal family.
All are welcome to this talk, schoolchildren and students no charge, visitors £3 and members are reminded that annual subscriptions of £10 are due for the year 2016. Refreshments are served afterwards when there is an opportunity to talk to the speaker.
