A view on the Referendum vote

I write in relation to your appeal for opinions regarding the EU referendum.

The main issue is simply one of democracy – our ability to vote for those who rule over us – a thought long divorced from the now EU.

We were asked in 1973 whether we wished to join the then Common Market and reassured this was simply a tariff free trading block. As the then "sick man of Europe" the British people voted then to remain.

The British people were misinformed then and have been ever since.

The EU now has five presidents, an anthem, a flag, a police force, a currency and very soon an army.

David Cameron, explaining the risks of a Brexit, obtained very few verbal reassurances from the EU – if we Remain more and more legislation will apply and we will be told that we had our chance.

We are the 5th largest economy and do not need to be held back by the stagnant and declining EU.
