A “PUB CRAWL”  THROUGH A  TIME WARP

What’s in a name?

One way to find out is to join Audlem PROBUS Club members on a “pub crawl” with a difference this Thursday (24th Sept).

It’ll be an alcohol-free insight for the Club’s retired professional and business men and women, delving into “The Origins of Pub Signs” and touching, for example, on some surprising historical facts and associations with religion and wars.

Alan Eastwood is a retired chemical engineer whose work took him around the world. During that time, he developed an interest in beer after sampling the different versions available overseas. That taste for the topic has stayed with him through his years as a member, Secretary and Past Chairman of Knutsford and Plumley Probus Club.

Alan explains that, after experiencing several talks at his Probus club, he decided to produce some talks himself, adding:  “Not knowing what subjects to talk about, my Probus colleagues told me I should speak about beer, as I was always ‘going on’ about it during Probus walks.”

That led to Alan producing six talks, all involving beer and/or pubs! This Thursday’s presentation will be about how pubs came by their names. He says: “I’ll explain how most pub signs can be categorised under various topics such as heraldry, religion, trades, etc.  The Reformation under Henry VIII caused some significant changes to pub names, as did the Wars of the Roses.”

Alan will also be talking about local pub signs and modern pub signs.
