February W.I. Meeting – A Vibrant Part of a Vibrant Village

Whilst trying to find something inspirational about this month, I decided all I could say is that February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March!

On reflection though, without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities and there are certainly many of those coming up for our next meeting!

The weather forecast may be grim, but our loyal and determined members will don their warm layers, apply ice grippers to their shoes and descend en masse to the Scout and Guide Hall in expectation of yet another afternoon of friendship, educational activities and learning new skills!

This month's speaker will be Barbara Taylor who will be enlightening us by giving a talk on 'The Norwegian Vice Consul.'

Now a good speech should be like a women's skirt, long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest, so if your knowledge on Norway or Vice Consul's is, like mine, zilch, we can all look forward to an interesting and enlightening talk.

This is the opportunity that the WI gives you. A sense of belonging, a chance to learn new things and to develop a social life, all at the same time, well we ladies are renowned for our multi-tasking!

We are also offering our members the 'once every three years opportunity. to put their names down for the exciting prospect of winning a Denman Bursary. The draw will be made in March.

To those uninitiated W.I.members, this represents a prize of £350 to be used on any course the lucky winner chooses at Denman College. Denman offers a wide variety of day and residential courses in cookery, craft and lifestyle. Set in the village of Marcham in Oxfordshire, it provides the perfect setting for learning new skills.

This month's competition is to 'Design a Valentine Card.'

Now we all know that being a woman can be a terribly difficult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men, but let us all throw our prejudices aside and concentrate on the artistic and talented side of our skill sets. Everybody's contribution is important, so let's all pull together and give this month's judge a hard time in deciding upon a winner!

The committee has high expectations that this is going to be one of our more popular competitions, so come on ladies, set your creative juices flowing.

We will all look forward to seeing you on Thursday February 5th at 2.00pm at the Scout and Guide Hall.
