The technical team decided to take advantage of the editor sampling the fleshpots of the metropolis to sneak in a new version of the website design. This is version 5 (or V to the classically educated) and we hope you like it. Stand by for 300 chatbox entries saying how much better the old version was.

Home page layout

A much more flexible piece of elastic has been fitted to the computer which controls the page layout and as a result the display now adjusts itself to whatever size of display is being used, be it PC, tablet, ipad, phone or whatever. Not only is the display more elastic, but the layout of the items on the screen can also be varied by the webteam to suit whatever combination of news happens to be in vogue on the day.

Trending

There is a whole new type of news information now, known as #trending ( the # or "hash-tag" is very important – you are nobody nowadays if you don't regularly use hashtags). So the bottom part of the home page is devoted to #trending. If any readers know what it actually is, we would be delighted to know.

Main menu

The main menu goes back to the days of a menu across the top giving "drop-downs" for more detail – this is the way it was done when our technical manager was born, and in the nature of things it has come full circle and is now back in fashion again.

Interactive map

Ever since the dioramas were created, they have provided the map on which the interactive map feature was based. This gives an attractive and individual result, but suffers from being difficult to keep up to date (and as Gladman et al change Audlem into Basingstoke, this will become increasingly important), and also from being unfamiliar now that everyone and everything is based on Google maps.
So we have bowed to the inevitable, and our interactive map is now based on Google, with the Audlem special bits added – there is still a full gazetteer and list of shops etc.
