Regular readers may have seen the aerial photograph of the Transport Festival as vehicles assembled on the playing field yesterday.

It was taken by local aviator Geoff Farr who felt that the photo opportunity, and a glorious sunny day, was the perfect excuse to get into his aeroplane and enjoy a short flight.

As he taxied the plane and took off from a field north of Audlem, he spotted something unusual lying in the field near to his grass runway in longer grass. Unsure what it was, and whether it was alive or dead, he immediately checked it out as soon as he landed.

It turned out to be a newly born calf which had somehow been separated from its mother and was suffering in the heat and breathing with some difficulty. The farmer was contacted and help was soon on its way.

After a phone call this morning, the good news is that the calf is alive and well and seemingly thriving. But without that flight yesterday, the outcome may have been sadly different.
