The newly formed Audlem Tourism Group is pulling together plans to see if the village can provide wi-fi facilities along the canal for visiting boaters.

It has been reported to the Audlem Tourism Group one of the reasons that narrow boats do not stay in the Audlem area as long as they might is because of a lack of connectivity along the canal locally.

The Group has investigated installing facilities to provide wi-fi along the canal by an Antenna attached to the wall of Audlem Mill. This should provide free wi-fi north and south of the Mill to a distance of approximately 400m each way.

This will signal to visitors that Audlem is providing a vital facility for many, indeed most, visitors, so encouraging them to stay longer and shop and use our pubs, cafes and take-aways to a much greater extent.

The closure of the canal five years ago following a breach demonstrated very clearly how much many of our businesses in the village need canal traffic. We have a large number of shops, pubs etc for a village of this size, which is of great benefit to local residents. They will only survive if they attract sufficient custom and encouraging boaters to stay in the village longer will add to that custom and the atmosphere in the village significantly.

The Tourism Group, which has been formed to support local tourism, is considering asking Audlem Parish Council for funding support as free wi-fi will benefit businesses, visitors and residents alike – it is a community project in the widest sense.
