Slow Broadband?

Audlem Online has received some reports of very slow Broadband in recent weeks.

One user of AOL – that's not Audlem Online but the somewhat larger operation from the States which offers a Broadband service – says the speed at present is seemingly slower than the old days of Dial-Up. And that's despite living very near the BT exchange in the centre of the village.

Audlem Online did run a three month survey a year ago which was reported to the UK Digital Champion, a national Government post. That survey indicated speeds were a long way short of advertised speeds and, during the period of the survey, were getting slower.

It appears that for some, including our AOL customer, they have virtually ground to a halt.

Hopefully, if reports are true, all should get better from May onwards when we are told the Audlem exchange will be upgraded to handle 20mbps speeds. As Audlem Online reported on 23rd December, using information from the Crewe Chronicle:

"Villagers in Audlem will soon benefit from superfast broadband after BT revealed the latest phase of its roll-out programme.

"Audlem homes are among around 24,800 across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire to be included in the next generation broadband service over copper lines.

"Businesses and homes should have access to it by summer 2012.

"The BT investment makes available broadband speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (mbps) – more than double the maximum speeds previously available to the majority of UK homes and businesses.

"This investment is in addition to the £2.5bn BT roll-out of super-fast fibre-based broadband, which is expected to bring even faster speeds to two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014."
