The first Short-ARS walk takes place this coming Saturday, 27th February. It's a new idea from the Audlem Ramblers Society and will, it's hoped, appeal to current ARS members and others looking for a shorter walk than the normal ARS expeditions.

Short-ARS walks are 5 to 7 miles in length with only easy climbs. They will normally be on the last Saturday of the month. The walks will be no more than 45 minutes or so (and usually less) driving from Audlem.

Sandstone TrailThis Saturday's walk is a five-mile figure of eight hike around the Sandstone Trail area, 30 minutes drive west of Audlem. Most regular walkers will know the area but for those that don't, it's that ridge running north-south you can see clearly from Audlem on the horizon to the west.

If you are interested, meet up at 9.30am Saturday on the main Car Park in Audlem. Walkers need to wear good stout shoes or walking boots and carry wet weather gear. Bring a packed lunch although we should be back in Audlem early afternoon for the customary 'de-brief' in a local hostelry.

The five-mile hike takes in the attractive ridge rising to Rawhead – with views on a clear day to Chester, the Wirral and Liverpool – then, after passing by the starting point – it is a figure of eight route – a pleasant circular walk through woodland with fine views eastwards.

There's a couple of short inclines and a small number of stiles. The paths are normally in good condition although they can be slippy in icy conditions as ARS found out a year ago in this same area.

The walk will be led by Bob Cartwright and Helen Davenport. If you need any advice, please call on 812171 or email bobjcartwright@yahoo.co.uk">bobjcartwright@yahoo.co.uk

Walkers are expected to become members of ARS, although do come along for a "trial" walk to see if joining is likely to appeal. Annual membership is £5.
