This coming Saturday's Short-ARS walk covers a route described in the Walks section of AudlemOnline's tourist section.

It covers a series of footpaths that are rarely walked which means there can be some problems with vegetation but two members of ARS negotiated the route last week for the recce with few problems except some nettles.

It's a walk of five to six miles but with only a few minor inclines. There's a good number of stiles making it a 'Three Slipper' walk, that is at the longer end of the Short-ARS range. The leader on Saturday is Christine Johnson.

Meet on Audlem car park on Saturday 29th August for a 9.30am departure. The group should be back in the village for about 12.30 – and Beer Festival refreshment at The Lord Combermere.

Non-members of ARS are welcome to join a walk but are expected to join after a trial walk or two (annual fee is £5). You must also have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, have water and be suitably fit for the various length walks.

The description of the walk is:

The erection of a bridge at Brooks Mill, down the lane from the chapel at Lightwood Green, makes possible a circular walk of just over 5 miles.

No one had been able to cross Barnett Brook for many years and we are indebted to the former Cheshire County Council for the work. (The bridge has recently been refurbished by Cheshire East). The scenery is varied.

Leave the village southwards on the canal towpath. At the first bridge at Lock 8 cross the lock, climb up to the bridge and head towards Swanbach and cross the A529 on to Mill Lane. As the road turns right, go left on on the footpath which goes south to Heywood Lane.

Before reaching the lane, turn north westwards again on another footpath which soon turns westward towards Lightwood Green past some small lakes and passing Newtown Farm. The path eventually joins a small road, where you turn right past houses and a factory before meeting the main road. Turn left and cross the A525 and walk past the Lightwood Green Methodist Chapel down the lane to Brooks Mill.

Cross the bridge and head right towards Lower House Farm on Back Coole Lane. Walk right towards Audlem and then shortly go left on a footpath to Manor Farm on Coole Lane. Turn left towards Nantwich and leave Coole Lane on the right after passing Park House Farm.

Then head downhill over the fields towards the canal and cross the Weaver on the concrete bridge. Emerge on the bridge at lock 15, near the Old Stables and walk southwards up the towpath back into the village.

A few words of advice: if walking this independently, take a map as not all the paths are clearly signed and the field after the old railway line towards the Weaver can be boggy.
